Regulation table tennis table dimensions, the room size for comfortable, tight and competitive play, and how folding, rollaway and fixed tables compare.

Regulation ping pong table dimensions

A regulation (ITTF) table tennis table is 9 ft long, 5 ft wide and 30 in high, with a net that stands 6 in above the surface. A full-size home table is the same size, so you do not get a smaller game by buying a cheaper table. All three tables we sell are full size: 108 x 60 in with a 30 in playing height.

The table is the easy part. The room is what people get wrong, because a rally needs space behind both ends and at both sides, and a player who has to stop short of a wall will not play the same game.

How big a room do you need?

For comfortable recreational play, plan on a play area of roughly 19 x 11 ft. That gives about 5 ft behind each end and 3 ft at each side of the table. The tight minimum is about 16 x 10 ft, which leaves 3.5 ft behind each end and 2.5 ft at each side.

Treat these as the open floor you need, not the room size. A 12 x 20 ft room works as a recreational ping pong room, but the same room with a sofa along one wall does not. Use our room size calculator to check your room against a table, and if you are planning a basement, our basement game room layout guide shows how a table sits next to other games.

Ceiling height and lighting

Lobbed shots rise higher than people expect. A ceiling of 8 ft is workable for casual play, but more height is better, and low beams, ducts and pendant lights above the table will be hit sooner or later. Lighting should be even over the whole table with no bare bulb in the player's eye line. Light that comes from the sides, or from fixtures placed outside the play area, is easier to see through than one bright pendant.

Indoor vs outdoor

Treat all three of our tables as indoor tables. The Butterfly Centrefold is specified as an indoor model, and any laminate surface will suffer from moisture, direct sun and temperature swings. Outdoor tables use weather-resistant tops, which is a different product. If your space is an unheated garage or a covered porch, think of it as a risk to the table and not a place to leave it.

Folding, rollaway or fixed?

All three of our tables have the same 108 x 60 in top, so the question is storage and use.

Butterfly Centrefold 25

A permanent setup for regular play that can still fold. The 25 mm top gives a consistent bounce, and each half can be used as a practice wall for solo play. It weighs about 215 lb and needs two people to assemble.

Butterfly Space Saver 25 Rollaway

For rooms that have to do other things. It folds in half and rolls on eight casters, four of them with brakes, so a room can be a game room on Saturday and something else on Monday. The 25 mm top plays like the Centrefold, and the frame locks when open. It weighs about 230 lb, but rolling takes one person once you have the technique. Note that standing folded it is 62 in tall.

RS Barcelona You and Me

A table to be looked at: a finished metal and wood base instead of folding frames, and a smooth 22 mm top. It plays like a normal table, so the extra money is for appearance. Buy it if the table will stay in a room people use, and photograph the finish against your room first.

Common rooms, checked against the chart

  • 12 x 12 ft spare bedroom: too small for a full-size table.
  • 15 x 10 ft room: just under the tight minimum. Casual only.
  • 16 x 10 ft room: the tight minimum. It works, with the walls close.
  • 20 x 12 ft basement room: a good recreational fit, with no other furniture on the play area.
  • Two-car garage: enough floor, but a poor environment for an indoor table.

Noise carries too. A ping pong ball is quiet, but players are not, so a room above a bedroom may be a problem during an evening match. A firm floor also helps the ball: do not put the table on a thick soft rug, because the feet will not stay level.

Which should you buy?

  • The room is a dedicated game room: the Centrefold or the You and Me. Pick on how much the look matters.
  • The room has another job: the Space Saver Rollaway. If you give up the floor only at game time, a table that rolls away is worth the effort.
  • You have a 16 x 10 ft room: either Butterfly table works, but you will notice the walls in long rallies.

Delivery is curbside by default, and the tables are large and heavy, so see shipping and returns before you pick a delivery day. Browse the full ping pong tables range, or look at foosball room sizes and shuffleboard table sizes if you are planning a room with more than one game.

Bottom line

A full-size table is 9 x 5 ft, and you want about 19 x 11 ft of open floor, or 16 x 10 ft at the very least. Buy a fixed or folding table if the room is dedicated, a rollaway if the room has other duties, and keep it indoors. Measure the open area, not the room, before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play ping pong in a 12 x 12 ft room?

It is too tight for a full-size table. The 9 ft length leaves only 1.5 ft behind each end, so rallies end the moment a player steps back. A half-table or a larger room is a better answer.

What does the thickness of the top mean?

A thicker top is stiffer and gives a more consistent bounce. The Butterfly tables have 25 mm tops and the RS Barcelona You and Me has a 22 mm top.

Can a ping pong table fit in a 15 x 10 ft room?

Barely. A 9 x 5 ft table leaves 3 ft behind each end and 2.5 ft at each side, which is just under the 16 x 10 ft tight minimum. It works for casual rallies but not for chasing lobs.

Do I need to level a ping pong table?

Yes. All three tables have adjustable feet or levelers, and an out-of-level table changes how the ball bounces. Check the level with a spirit level after you move or assemble the table.
