Shuffleboard Table Sizes: How Long a Table Do You Need?

Choose the right shuffleboard table length for your room. Sizes from 9 to 22 ft, clearance needs, regulation specs and buying tips.

Updated November 4, 2026 · Grand Game Room specialists

Table shuffleboard is one of the easiest games to learn and one of the hardest to put down. It is also one of the longest pieces of furniture you can bring into a home, so length is the first decision you make. This guide explains standard shuffleboard sizes, how much room each needs and what else to look for. Browse our full shuffleboard collection once you know your length.

Standard Shuffleboard Table Lengths

Home and commercial shuffleboard tables are typically made in lengths from about 9 ft to 22 ft, usually in 1 to 2 ft steps. The Table Shuffleboard Association (TSA), the governing body for the sport in the US, uses 22 ft tables for official tournament play.

Length Best for
9 to 12 ft Smaller rooms, family play, apartments with a long wall
14 to 16 ft Most home game rooms and basements
18 to 20 ft Dedicated game rooms, bars, serious recreational players
22 ft Tournament length, large rooms, commercial venues

Longer tables make the game harder: more distance means more touch is needed to land a weight in the scoring zone. Shorter tables play faster and are friendlier for kids and new players.

Width and height

Most shuffleboard tables have an overall cabinet width of roughly 2 ft to 2.5 ft, with a playfield about 20 inches wide. Typical playing height is about 30 to 31 inches, similar to a dining table. Always check the exact specifications on each product page.

How Much Room Does a Shuffleboard Table Need?

Length clearance

Players stand at the end of the table to shoot, so you need space behind each end. Plan at least 2 to 3 ft at each end, and more if possible. A quick formula:

Room length = table length + 4 to 6 ft

Table length Minimum room length
12 ft about 16 to 18 ft
14 ft about 18 to 20 ft
16 ft about 20 to 22 ft
18 ft about 22 to 24 ft
20 ft about 24 to 26 ft
22 ft about 26 to 28 ft

Width clearance

Players walk alongside the table to reach the other end and to retrieve weights. Leave at least 3 ft on one long side, ideally both. A long wall with the table pushed close works if one side stays open, which is why shuffleboard often fits rooms that cannot take a pool table.

The Playfield: What Makes a Good Shuffleboard

Solid hardwood playfield

Quality tables use a thick playfield made from laminated hardwood strips, commonly maple or similar species, finished with a durable polymer coating. Thickness of 2 to 3 inches is common on premium tables. A thick, solid playfield resists warping and gives a smooth, consistent glide.

Climate adjusters

Because a long wood playfield responds to humidity, better tables include climate adjusters: bolts underneath that let you fine-tune the crown or curvature of the surface. Players often prefer a slight crown, which helps the weights track predictably.

Gutters and bumpers

The gutters catch weights that fly off the end or the sides. Padded bumpers at the ends protect the weights and finish.

Cabinet and legs

Shuffleboards are long, so cabinet stiffness matters. Look for solid construction, enough legs for the length and leg levelers so you can level the table on an uneven floor.

Weights, Powder and Accessories

  • Weights (pucks): Standard sets include eight weights, four of each color. Weights are typically about 2 1/16 inches in diameter.
  • Shuffleboard powder: Also called wax or sand, it reduces friction. Powders come in speeds, from slow to fast. Shorter tables usually play better with faster powder; longer tables often use slower powder.
  • Cover and brush: Keep dust off the playfield and brush away old powder before play.

Basic Scoring and Play

Players slide weights toward the far end, taking turns. Weights that stop in the zones score 1, 2 or 3 points, and a weight hanging over the far edge scores 4 (often called a "hanger"). Only the player with the weight farthest down the table scores each round. It is simple to learn and deeply strategic, which is why shuffleboard is a bar and game room favorite.

How to Choose Your Length: A Step-by-Step

  1. Measure your longest clear wall or the length of the room.
  2. Subtract 4 to 6 ft for player space at both ends.
  3. Check side clearance of at least 3 ft.
  4. Choose the longest table that fits, unless young kids will be the main players.
  5. Confirm the delivery path. A long playfield ships in one piece and must fit through doors, halls and stair turns. Measure corners carefully.

Delivery considerations

A 20 ft playfield cannot bend around tight corners. If your basement has a narrow stair with a landing turn, a shorter table may be the only option. Check our shipping and returns page and talk to us via the consultation page before ordering.

Planning a Room With Several Games

Shuffleboard pairs well with a pool table, as long as clearance zones do not overlap. Read our game room layout and clearance guide to plan a multi-game room.

Indoor and Outdoor Shuffleboard

Table shuffleboard is an indoor game. The polymer-coated hardwood playfield is sensitive to rain, sun and temperature, so it belongs in a climate-controlled room. Covered porches and three-season rooms are risky because humidity swings can change the crown. If you want shuffleboard outside, consider a dedicated outdoor deck shuffleboard court, which is a different game played with cues on the ground.

Care and Maintenance

  • Brush off old powder before each session.
  • Apply fresh powder lightly and evenly.
  • Wipe the playfield with a cleaner made for shuffleboard surfaces, not household polish.
  • Keep a cover on when not in use.
  • Check level and crown seasonally.

Frequently asked questions

What is regulation shuffleboard table length?

Tournament play sanctioned by the Table Shuffleboard Association uses 22 ft tables.

What is the most popular home shuffleboard size?

Lengths of 14 to 16 ft are the most common choice for home game rooms, balancing challenge with typical basement space.

How much room do I need for a 12 foot shuffleboard?

Plan for about 16 to 18 ft of room length and at least 3 ft of clear walkway along one side.

Which shuffleboard powder should I use?

Faster powders suit shorter tables and slower powders suit long tables. Try different speeds until weights glide the full table with a controlled push.

Do shuffleboard tables warp?

Solid hardwood playfields are very stable, and climate adjusters let you correct small changes in crown caused by humidity.
